Identification of Native Zoysiagrasses (Zoysia spp .) Using Morphological characteristics and Esterase Isozymes

Abstract
Morphological characteristics and isozyme band pattern have been used for the identification of zoysiagrass species. However, quantitative characteristics such as leaf width and seed length do not provide clear standards for identification of species Those characteristics showed wide range of variation within the population of each species because of environmental effects and natural hybridization In this study, morphological characteristics of 79 ecotypes, mostly collected from west and south coastal area, were analyzed Thirty nine ecotypes showing typical phenotypes of zoysiagrass species were selected and their esterase (EST) band patterns were compared. Average leaf width (Standard Deviation) of Z. japonica, ¡¾0. sinica, Z. matrella and Z. macrostachya were 5.03 (¡¾0.66), 3.25 (¡¾0.42), 1.96 (¡¾0.22) and 3.26 (¡¾0.44) §®, respectively. Average seed length (Standard Deviation) of above species except Z. matrella were 2.86 (¡¾0.22), 6.66 (¡¾0.64), and 6,31 (¡¾0.32) §®, respectively. EST band patterns showed differences among 5 major species as well as intermediate types. However, intermediate types showed mixed band patterns of two or more major species.
